To maintain the manufacturer's warranty and ensure a long service life of the new roofing system, installation should be carried out according to the recommended specifications. In most cases, these specifications do not allow a new metal roof to be installed directly over an existing one.
Although this approach is sometimes used in practice, it can lead to several issues in the future.
First, the combination of the old and new roofing materials creates additional load on the roof structure. Before any work begins, it is important to ensure that the rafters and other wooden components are in good condition and capable of supporting the extra weight.
Second, condensation can accumulate between the two metal layers. Moisture promotes corrosion, accelerates the deterioration of the old roof covering, and may eventually cause leaks.
Proper ventilation is equally important. If adequate airflow cannot be ensured within the roof structure, the roof may overheat during summer, while trapped moisture can damage wooden elements and reduce the lifespan of the entire roofing system.
It should also be noted that any future repairs will become more complicated. If a leak or other issue develops, locating and fixing the problem will be more difficult because there will be two layers of metal roofing to work through.
In addition, the existing roof surface is not always perfectly even. This can affect both the appearance and the overall quality of the newly installed roof.
Whenever possible, we recommend removing the old metal roof and installing the new roofing system according to proper installation standards. This allows the roof structure to be inspected, ensures correct waterproofing and ventilation, and helps maximize the lifespan of the new roof.
